Dixau Text Scanner Uses the Internet to Help You Understand Big Words

Reading comprehension not your thing? Fear not because a Korean company named Unichal has developed a tiny scanner that can capture an image of troublesome words and then relay them back to the PC. Once there, the included software will automatically apply the term to Wikipedia, Google, or a dictionary of your choosing to aid in your understanding. A gadget like this could definitely be useful—especially for someone learning a second language. Plus, at around $90, it's not going to break the bank. A video of the Dixau in action is available after the break.

Canon's Selphy ES2 Photo Printer Can't Hold Your Lunch

Though the lunchbox business is long dead, their futuristic-yet-tote-friendly look has made its way to the 4x6 photo printers. Canon's 4.5lb. dye-sub Selphy ES2 is the latest example, with its 3" LCD, an "Easy-Scroll" wheel, simple snap-and-print ink cartridges and built-in clipart for adding cartoon antics to your more somber shots. Now if only the $200 printer came emblazoned with Batman or, say, Josie and some of the tastier Pussycats.

Canon Intros Retro Portable Printers: Selphy ES3 and ES30

Although both of Canon’s latest printers are almost identical, the ES3 takes the big brother label by sporting 1gig of on board memory for storing photos, additional clip art and photo frames and a larger LCD. They both feature a 15-in-1 memory card reader, a 3.5-inch LCD for previewing photos (3.0-inches for the ES30), are PictBridge compatible (this allows you to connect a camera and print from it), and use Canon ink and paper cartridges.
I guess they’re available now (Amazon has them) and will go for $200 for the ES3, and $150 for the ES30. I don’t see the appeal, but they do look oh so Euro. Plus the cartridges probably cost an arm and a leg.

Compact Photo Printer from Epson

Friday, 30 May 2008Epson is the brand of choice for many pro photographers. I personally agree with that opinion since I have been using many Epson photo printers and tried many others, so I bought its latest portable printer, the top of the range PM 290, for my dad. Many beginners in digital camera (including my dad) found it difficult to transfers photo files from memory card into a CD. This is the main reason why I chose this printer for Dad.
Second, the photo print quality also very good compared to Noritsu minilab photo printer. This printer has a great resolution of 5,760x1,440 dpi that will in theory deliver much more detail than similarly priced dye-sublimation printers. According to many photo magazine reviewers, this epson picturemate PM 290 beats its competitors in quality. But I would rather think that the print quality is similar to canon Selphy ES1 compact photo printer that I tried. The following pictures illustrate the main parts of the printer:

The cost per print is very reasonable. You can get as low as 20 cents per print (4R) including photo paper and ribbon.

I would highly recommend this printer for you who need the following features:1. Very good photo print quality (compared to minilab print quality)2. Low print cost (around 20 cents per 4-by-6-inch print)3. Built-in CD burner4. Built-in rechargeable battery for traveling

Intel X25-M Solid State Disks (SSD) Review

Hard disk have been the staple storage devices for desktop and notebook PCs for God knows how long, and they’ve served us well. For the most part, we’ve seen improvements in transfer and read/write speeds, and capacities. Although we’ve been content with the enhancements, other factors like longevity, noise, portability and endurance became issues of concern due to the popularity of the notebook market and the gaming community. For this reason the development of Solid-State-Disks (SSD) began some time back and now we’re seeing it bear fruit. Intel sent over our very first SSD in the form of X25-M.
SSD are a major evolution in the area of storage. The most obvious difference between HDDs and SSDs is that the latter doesn’t use any mechanical or moving parts. This means that SSDs are much faster, noiseless, more compact, and are less vulnerable to impact. Internally, SSDs consists of several cells with transistors. When writing data, electrical charges are applied to the transistors, which tunnels electrons into and out of a ‘floating gate’. When no voltage is applied, the electrons stay in the gate and that’s when your data is stored. This is of course a very basic explanation of how SSD works. Now there are two different types of memory in SSDs: Single-Level Cell (SLC) and Multi-Level Cell (MLC). Essentially, both take up the same die area, but SLC stores 1-bit per cell while MLC stores 2-bits, which results it being twice the capacity as the former. However, SLC only use two voltages (0 and 1) since it’s 1-bit while MLC has to worry about four states (00,01,10,11), thus MLC takes longer to access. But the difference is in nanoseconds; hardly something to be concerned about.
As we mentioned earlier, MLC is based on the same die area as SLC. With more cells manufactured on a single die, MLC is practically more cost effective and therefore cheaper than SLC drives. The only downside to MLC drives is that they have a shorter lifespan than SLC drives. The X25-M is based on the MLC design and thus belongs to the mainstream category as denoted by the ‘M’ suffix. From the image above, it’s hard to imagine how big it is. But in fact, it’s really small; 2.5” wide, 3.9” long, and 0.2” thick to be precise.
We benchmarked the drive with good old HDTachRW and Pcmark Vantage, and the results were phenomenal. In HDTachRW, the X-25 had a sequential average read speed of 225.8MB/s while it burst speed is about 253MB/s. What really blew us away is the score that HDD suite produced, and that is a whopping mega figure of 37,440. The highest we’ve ever gotten with the Raptor X was only 4,993 b the way.
It’s hard not to be immensely impressed with Intel’s X25-M, especially after you’ve seen how fast it can be. But the sad thing is that it only has 89GB of space. Just like any new hardware, high price tags are given since it’s a new technology. Eventually, manufacturing costs will drop so rest assure that you’ll get your hands on one later.

Joysticks

Gaming input devices include joysticks, gamepads, and specialized gaming keypads. These devices are all designed to control your in-game character, vehicle, animal or widget. These controllers all connect to your computer the same way that a mouse or keyboard would, through a USB port. We'll take a look here at the most common of them.

Joysticks were once the king of gaming input devices. The advancements of the mouse have taken over a lot of the jobs it once held. Now, joysticks are used mostly for flight or space simulations. A basic joystick consists of a handheld stick that can be tilted in 360 degrees, and sometimes twisted left or right. Joysticks that are made for flight simulators will normally come with a separate controller for the throttle controls.

Joysticks are designed to be used in one hand, with the base either being held or on a desktop. Normally, the hand not using the joystick will use the keyboard or throttle control. This is a must for flight simulators, as today's simulators are quite realistic and complex.
As with some other gaming input devices, joysticks can also come with Force Feedback. Force feedback is a technology that vibrates or moves the joystick based on in game actions, for instance when getting shot at in a dogfight.
Purchasing a joystick takes a bit of research. There is a wide range of joysticks and along with that is a wide range of prices. Things to take into consideration...

What type of games do you play? If you are a flight simulation fan or enjoy space fighting games, then you will want to consider a joystick / throttle combination. Depending on the quality of construction, available functions, and customization options, you can pay anywhere from $30.00 to $250.00. Some of the top joystick / throttle controllers include:

Gamepad

Gamepads have their origin with console gaming systems like Nintendo and Atari. Gamepads are held in both hands, and use 1 or 2 joysticks or joypads (directional pads) along with multiple buttons to control your onscreen action. Normally, the joypad or joysticks are controlled by the thumbs, along with multiple buttons, while there may be trigger buttons below the gamepad for use by the index fingers.
Gamepads come in various layouts, with anywhere from 4 to 16 buttons, and 2-4 joysticks / joypads. When purchasing a gamepad, there are a couple things to keep in mind:
Price - most gamepads are priced in the $10.00 - $35.00 range.
Compatibility - Not all games will support a gamepad. If you are looking to pick up a gamepad for a specific game, make sure the game supports a gamepad.

USB Server Shares Peripherals

Keyspan's unique USB Server.

Buy a network-ready printer, and you'll pay hundreds more than you would for a simple USB-connected one. But less-expensive USB printers and the vast variety of other USB peripherals function solely as single-computer devices.
Keyspan's USB Server is unique because it lets you share several such devices among multiple networked PCs--and without leaving any of your PCs turned on.
You connect the $130 USB Server to your network via its ethernet port. The USB Server has four USB 1.1 ports, and allows you to share multifunction devices, printers, scanners, and even input devices (mice and keyboards). External hard drives may work too, but the company says they'll perform more slowly than if attached directly to the PC.
When you connect a peripheral to the server, a small application on each networked PC will show that it's available. Click a button to connect to the server, and if the device isn't already installed, you'll receive a Windows prompt to set it up, just as if you had plugged it into the back of the PC.
I looked at a shipping USB Server and found using peripherals through it almost as easy as if they were connected to a USB port on my computer. I tried it with two PCs, a printer, and a scanner; I could print and scan at the same time, with no apparent slowdown. However, the server will not allow two systems to access the same peripheral simultaneously, so I could not queue print jobs. Keyspan says it's working on that, but most of these devices weren't meant to be shared.
If you have a stable of USB 1.1 peripherals, especially devices that aren't printers, using the USB Server can help avoid sharing conflicts.

New Gaming Keyboard from Wolf King

This is definitely a far cry from a conventional keyboard, but it is a new option to consider provided by Wolf King.
This keyboard does boast some of the similarities of the Wolf Claw keyboard, but there is no QWERTY keyboard.
Apparently it does have several customisable keys, extra USB ports and blue back lighting. There has been no word when it will be released or on a price, from the picture it does look as if it may be coming soon. I can’t really see this keyboard being everyone’s cup of tea; however, it does look pretty cool.

The New HP Wireless Printer!

HP has released a new wireless printer. The HP photo smart C4380 is the latest in wireless printers. The printer was designed to run with no USB cables from the printer to the computer, after initial installation. The printer can be placed anywhere on your wireless network, that there is an electrical outlet. Not only can you wireless print documents to the new photo smart wireless printer, you can also scan wirelessly to your desktop. This wireless printer is on the low end of the spectrum. The average retail price is approximately $150. Making it affordable to just about everyone. My last two printers were HP inkjet printers, that printed pictures just fine and their cost was under $50. There are ways of setting up your wired printer that is attached to your desktop to print wirelessly from your laptop, but it proves to be a headache setting up the printer on your existing wireless network.

Cooling AMD Athlon Dual Core Processors

With the advancement in processors, there has been a decrease in the power requirements for computer processors. Processors had started to get a little out of hand, with some of the Intel processors hitting majorly high heat levels due to high power consumption.
New dual-core processors have again pushed up the power requirements for processors as there are now two cores put inside a single chip.
Tomshardware have taken to task and explore some processors that are suitable for the new breed of AMD Athlon X2 Dual-Core processors, in this case, the 4800+ version.
The standard cooler that comes with the retail box that AMD chips comes in is really the reference point to start from as there are many people who really don’t want to go to the trouble of changing or upgrading their cooler, at least for a while.
The alternatives presented are pretty tame in comparisson to many of the more intense coolers on the market that can weight a ton and keep things so cold that they can cool nearly anything they throw your way. The downside of these coolers is their large size and weight, as well as noise which play against them in a working environment where lower noise volumes are condusive to higher levels of concentration.
Of the six coolers that are pitted against the boxed cooler, most of them only offere the same or similar performance to it. At the end of the test, the Zalman Quiet Cooler comes out as the best of the test. Managing the coolest temperatures in the test, as well as the second quietest performance in the test, there is very little else to be said about it.
It is more expensive than the other models in the test, but if you are looking for the best, this is it. And besides, it should last a really long time, which helps to even out the initial outlay.

Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro CPU Cooler

The Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro CPU Cooler was pitted against a Thermaltake K450 at bjorn3d recently. Cooling is a major consideration for people nowadays. With the heat of some processors rising to newer higher levels and game enthusiasts pushing the envelope, overclocking their processors, the need is certainly there.
This cooler has a massive size and was much bigger than the authors original Thermaltake. The problem can occur is you use very high memory. In testing the RAM had to be moved to the B slots to accomodate the massive cooler. For those with usual RAM that has perhaps just a heat spreader, things should be fine, just not with Corsair RAM with the LEDs on top.
Performance for the fan was excellent and was actually able to keep the CPU cool without its fan turned on for over 2 hours and that was under load. Bearing in mind that his computer had great fans providing airflow they certainly made a difference. However, by itself it will keep almost any configuration you have in mind cool.

Thermaltake Rhythm Home Theater External Liquid Cooling System

Home theater computers have certain needs that normal PCs don’t really need, or at least don’t need as badly. Super low noise levels are required, although a quiet everyday computer is great the buzz of the office has become quite normal, but a noisy living room is not as great. They also need good looks if they are going to take a part of a system that is out there for everyone to see, unlike the computer tucked away in the corner or under a table.
The Thermaltake Rhythm makes a good counterpart to the Mozart home theater PC case. The cooling solution not only looks good, but performs it’s function well. In their review at bigbruin they managed to get a drop of 14 degrees with the cooling system situated inside the cabinet with the home theater computer.
It’s looks are well suited to a home theater and its two 120mm fans and large radiator inside do a good job of keeping things cool.

Thermaltake Big Typhoon Fan

With the hype of computers spreading far and wide, one of the biggest essentialities is to keep the processor cool to make it work efficiently. Here is Thermaltake Big Typhoon fan that can keep the system cool even if it has worked for 24×7 time period. The fan keeps any type computer system cool for providing best, fastest and quickest result.
The Big Typhoon fan is the latest discovery of Thermaltake. It contains a low speed 120 mm fan placed over 120×50 mm high-count aluminum convection fins. The fan is truly advantageous, for it not only provides good airflow but also provides huge surface area for cooling the system. Other specific features of the fan include heat pipes, optional rheostat for manual fan control and near universal applications.

Following are the list of significant features of Thermaltake Big Typhoon fan:

Applications – Intel LGA775, Intel P4 478 pin, AMD K7, AMD K8, AMD Sempron
Weight – 825 gms
Dimensions – 120mm square sloping to 67 x 50mm at its base
Height – 135mm
Fan Size – 120 x 25mm

Construction – copper base with aluminum fins
Static pressure – 1.87 mm/H2O
Power consumption – 3.6 W
Fan noise – 16 dBA

Thermaltake Big Typhoon fan has a unique construction. In between the aluminum fins and the copper base of the fan, there is a piece of plastic foam, which keeps the items solid and undamaged. There is also a large space between the heat sink base and the aluminum fins, which not only aid to cool better but also provide a huge amount of space to the unit.
Thermaltake Big Typhoon fan contains 6 heat pipes that transfer the heat quickly. The high-density aluminum fins inside the fan provide more surface area for excellent heat dissipation. The copper base solder provides the perfect base to ensure wonderful performance. The main quality of this fan is its silence - the fan performs excellently without making any noise at all.

VIA K8T800 Chipset Preview – Dual Opteron in Action

The Opteron Processor
Before we get into talking about the chipset, we will take a moment to have a look at the processor which will be accompanying our test motherboard today.
The AMD Opteron is the latest processor to hit the market and carries the long awaited 64-bit architecture to the retail market. While we have seen Intel release a 64-bit processor to the market in the shape of the Itanium and Itanium 2 some time ago, it was one product that the end-user would not consider purchasing due to its high price tag and lack of chipset support.

The Opteron comes with a massive 940 pin count which is the largest of any processor implementing the PGA format. PGA or Pin Grid Array can be separated into two parts: the first being Pin, which in this case is the small metal pins we see coming from the bottom of the processor and the other is the Grid Array. The Grid Array is the formation the pins are in, which here is a 940 pin formation. Together we have the highest pin count currently on the market for this kind of technology. The Opteron processor also carries a huge 1MB of L2 cache to help when it comes to processor-hungry applications. The Opteron also has three Hyper Transport buses which we will look into more in just a moment.

What else AMD has in store for 64-bit
While we are on the subject of AMD processors, we may as well have a quick look at what else AMD have in store for the 64-bit market.
The cheapest of AMD’s 64-bit line will be known as the Athlon 64 and will most likely be launched next month in Taiwan at Computex 2003. The Athlon 64 will be the entry level 64-bit processor and the mainstream product with a pin count of 754 replacing Athlon XP. Athlon 64 has the smallest amount cache out of the group with only 512k and will only support Single Channel DDR and one Hyper Transport Bridge meaning it is not SMP-capable.
The other processor which will be making an introduction, which seems to be confusing a lot of people, is Athlon FX or Athlon 64 FX. The Athlon FX will be the enthusiast processor, according to speculation currently floating around. Consisting of 1MB cache and three Hyper Transport buses, the only difference between it and the Opteron is support for SMP. The Athlon FX will consist of 939 pins; the pin that is missing is the one that gives it the ability to run Dual Processor mode.
Hyper Transport Buses
As we just mentioned, the Opteron and the Athlon FX will consist of multiple HT (Hyper Transport) buses, while the cheaper mainstream Athlon 64 will only have one.
One of the buses goes to your peripherals (your AGP slot, PCI slot, etc). This is the only one on the Athlon 64. The second bus is used between processor one and two, while the third bus is used when running quad processor systems.
While Athlon FX and Opteron have support for all three, the Athlon 64 and Athlon FX only use one. The Opteron only uses two - one for the peripherals and one that contacts the other processor for SMP mode operations. We may end up seeing an Opteron processor with three buses for quad processor setups, but we haven’t heard anything yet.
As far as we can tell and from what we have been told, the only difference between Athlon 64 and Athlon FX will be double the cache and the Dual Channel DDR controller built into the Athlon FX instead of the Single Channel option with the Athlon 64.

Intel Core2 Q6600 CPU (Updated)

Please note we have just added the 5400X2 and the E6700 into this review bring a total of 7 CPU's into the article including the Q6600.
It's that time of the year again. Your single or even dual core CPU is starting to feel the strain of multi-tasking, and you just need more power. That’s right, it's time for that dreaded "U" word. Upgrade. For the average user, an upgrade comes every couple of years. But for those of us who are always straining to keep up with the bleeding edge of technology, those upgrades can usually be measured in weeks. If you are looking for a new processor, the decision ultimately comes down to either Intel or AMD. While the two companies have always been trading the performance crown back and forth, currently Intel has a very firm grasp of it. With the release of its Q6600 processor a couple weeks ago at CES 2007, Intel has tightened that grasp even further. That’s right, you read it properly. Q6600 stands for Quad Core 6600. If a dual core CPU isn’t cutting it, I wonder how a quad core will do. Intel was nice enough to provide us with a Q6600 engineering sample to perform all of our testing on. In this review, we will be running over the basic change of CPU architecture as well as the mild overclocking of this processor. The introduction of a line of quad core processors is a big step for Intel. With the release of the Core 2 Duo CPUs, the company took the lead in CPU performance. With the release of a Quad line, Intel has propelled itself even further into the lead. As to whether these Quad core CPUs will yield a noticeable difference or not, we will soon find out. With applications either starting to be produced or updated, programmers are finally starting to include multi-threading support to use multiple CPUs. The real question that I have been countlessly asked is: "Do quad core CPUs provide actual real life performance gains, or is it purely a benchmark gain?" That is just one of the questions that this review will be answering!

iPower GX: a laptop gaming rig

Laptop gamers aren’t that many, but be sure that if they’re doing it on the laptop, it’s gotta be one of the best. For instance, the iPower GX maybe just what you’re looking for if you want to game on the go:
As such, you’ll find a sharp 1920 x 1200 pixel 17-inch display, ideal for gaming and high-definition media playback. It’s supported by a high-end nVidia GeForce 9800M GTS graphics card, with enough power to play the latest titles with ease.
Surprisingly for a company more accustomed to the budget end of the laptop market, this machine also features a powerful Intel Core 2 Quad processor and up to 4096MB of memory, promising outstanding multi-tasking capabilities.
Styling is similar to existing gaming laptops, with a combination of bright colours, glossy plastics and brushed aluminium. You’ll find a 320GB hard drive included as standard, with future options to include an integrated Blu-ray drive and up to 640GB of storage.

Asus' Updated EcoBook Bamboo Laptop Hands

We reported on Asus' ultra green EcoBook bamboo laptop back in March, but now that we're seeing it in person, we can tell the design has changed. This latest edition of the bamboo beauty features even more wood accents than before with bamboo surrounding the touchpad, as well as the bamboo facade. The bamboo is also blonder now. Asus reps teased us that this, too, was just a prototype and that the design may well change again before its release in 2008. We didn't get any additional info on what the EcoBook would include under the hood except that it would be based on Intel's Core Duo 2 processor. Even so, we want one.
